Sterckeman:
a point of history
The beginning
The story of Sterckeman begins in a family service station in Seclin, in the north of France. It was when he saw English customers hitching a caravan – called a trailer at the time – to their car, that Alexandre Sterckeman, 25 years old and a bodybuilder in his parents’ business, embarked on building his first caravan to go on vacation with his family. The caravan barely finished, he sold it to a passing doctor who fell under its charm. Even though the bodywork remains the financial driver, Alexandre continues to produce a few caravans a year in a modest hangar located next to the family service station.
From handcrafted manufacturing to industrial manufacturing
In 1950, the activity gained momentum, marking the beginning of a promising expansion: 50 caravans manufactured in 1954.800 in 1960.3500 in 1964! The uniqueness of its caravan: a unique construction method with a metal frame (not wood, like many manufacturers of the time). Inspired by wartime aviation, the metal structure was lightened with thousands of holes. In 1966, tired of the hassles of entrepreneurship, Alexandre Sterckeman sold his company, then the number 2 in the French market, to Bertrand Faure, an automotive equipment supplier.
Crédit Lyonnais/Trigano
In 1974, Crédit Lyonnais (then a nationalized bank) took control of TRIGANO and STERCKEMAN. In 1987, Trigano was privatized and the new management transferred the production of Sterckeman caravans from Seclin to Tournon-sur-Rhône in Ardèche (France).
FJORD – For those who live naturally.
While most caravan interiors are traditionally dark, STERCKEMAN is launching its new FJORD range, dressed in pastel fabrics specially chosen by a stylist to match the light shades of the woodwork. A range that, although evolved, was marketed until 1998.
